Reading comprehension is our ability to make sense of collective letters that form individual words, allowing us to understand their meaning and context within a passage of text. Word knowledge, or our vocabulary, helps us to do this. By knowing what each word means is of course important to understand what a piece of writing is trying to tell us. The more words we know, the more chance we have of understanding what we read. Simply getting stuck into as many books as possible helps improve reading comprehension, as well as using sight words flash cards and activities such as 'Zingo word builder'.
